Veiled Chameleon: Love your pet the right way!

5th Floor Xotics - Chameleon on plant

Veiled chameleons are a type of chameleon that are native to the Arabian Peninsula. They are a popular pet due to their unique appearance and relatively easy care requirements. However, they do have specific needs that must be met in order to ensure their health and well-being.

Housing:

A single veiled chameleon should have a cage at least 2 feet wide by 2 feet deep by 4 feet tall.
The cage should be made of mesh or screen to provide good ventilation and allow the chameleon to see out.
The cage should have branches, plants, and other climbing structures for the chameleon to perch on.
A basking spot with a heat lamp should be provided to maintain a temperature between 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit during the day.
A UVB lamp should also be provided to give the chameleon access to UVB light, which is essential for their health.
A water dish should be provided for drinking and bathing.

Feeding:

Veiled chameleons are insectivores, so their diet should consist mostly of insects such as crickets, roaches, and mealworms.
Vegetables such as collard greens and squash can be offered as a supplement, but should not make up more than 20% of the diet.
Dust the insects with a calcium powder supplement at least twice a week.
Offer fresh water daily

Cleaning:

The cage should be cleaned regularly, at least once a week. Remove any feces or uneaten food immediately. Clean and disinfect the cage, branches, and other structures as needed. Change the water in the water dish daily.

Health:

Veiled chameleons are prone to parasitic infections, respiratory infections and metabolic bone disease.
Regular vet check-ups are recommended.
Be alert for signs of illness such as lethargy, lack of appetite, and weight loss.
In general, Veiled chameleons make great pets for those who are willing to provide them with the proper care and attention. With the right setup and care, they can thrive and live for several years in captivity.

Males live up to 15 years, and due to calcium deficiency in females, they live until 8.
