Are you ready to take your dart frog vivarium to the next level? Well, look no further, because setting up a bioactive vivarium for dart frogs is the way to go. But before you start digging through th
e soil and adding beneficial bugs, let me give you the rundown on how to create the perfect, self-sustaining habitat for your colourful little friends.
Here are the steps you need to take to set up a bioactive vivarium for dart frogs:
- Start with a solid foundation: A layer of drainage material such as clay balls or orchid bark at the bottom of the tank will help prevent water from pooling and keep the soil from becoming waterlogged.
- Add a layer of soil: Use a quality soil mix specifically formulated for bioactive setups. This will provide a suitable environment for beneficial microorganisms to thrive.
- Add your plants: Select plants that are suitable for high humidity and low light levels. Make sure they are planted deep enough to anchor them in the soil and to promote root growth.
- Add some beneficial bugs: Springtails and isopods will help keep the soil healthy by breaking down organic matter and keeping pests under control.
- Add a water feature: Adding a small stream or a waterfall to the vivarium will not only look cool but also help to keep the humidity levels up.
- Keep the temperature in check: Dart frogs prefer temperatures between 72-78°F (22-26°C) so make sure to use a thermometer to keep an eye on the temperature.
- Lighting: A good LED or Fluorescent Light is required for healthy plant growth. Dart Frogs do not require UVA or UVB lighting but they may benefit if it is available.
- Maintenance: Keep an eye on the vivarium for any signs of overpopulation or pests and adjust accordingly.
Setting up a bioactive vivarium for dart frogs may seem like a lot of work, but the end result is a self-sustaining and beautiful habitat for your colourful little friends. Just remember, you’re basically creating a tiny rainforest in your living room, so don’t be surprised if you find some unexpected guests, like a mushroom or a small beetle
